Happiness

Watched 12 - 15 August 2022 — 12 episodes (DRAMACOOL)

Just finished watching Happiness 해피니스 (2021) today. Here are some of my random thoughts:

*My main reason for watching this series was its lead couple, because of the nice gifs I’ve seen on Tumblr, and Han Hyo-joo and Park Hyung-sik have good and natural chemistry. Han Hyo-joo’s character is feisty, confident, bold, seemingly fearless, often empathetic towards her fellow man, and she has nice rapport with the little girl. I didn’t find Park Hyung-sik very convincing as a brave and resolute cop, he’s too soft-hearted for that. Also, at times both their characters lacked common sense and their actions left a lot to be desired. Yet overall I liked them as a couple.
*But … and this is a big BUT … I’m not much of a horror fan and I don’t like zombies. In fact, I really dislike them. The zombies here are even laughable in their creepiness.
*Though the story premise of a virus outbreak sounds exciting, the plot is messy and puzzling with many incomprehensible turns, and around episode eight I wasn’t really curious anymore how things would end. I thought character motivations were seriously lacking, and often it didn’t make any sense why people acted the way they did. On top of that most of the supporting characters are unlikeable, annoying and inexplicably greedy. Near the end the plot derailed and the behaviour of the tenants was silly and bordering on the ridiculous.
*I also didn’t understand the progress of the disease, from being bitten to showing first symptoms, becoming thirsty for water and blood, turning into a zombie and then turning normal again.
*I wanted to see how the main couple was going to end up together, and mainly because of that I finished this series. (Luckily it was only 12 episodes.) I liked how Han Hyo-joo stood by her man and their kiss in the final episode was really sweet. Too bad the actual happy ending was rushed and left me with unanswered questions.
*What I like about K-drama in general is becoming emotionally involved with the characters, but that didn’t happen here at all.
*I will steer away from series involving zombies from now on!
*I did love the apartment building and the apartments.
