Welcome to Samdal-ri (2023) 웰컴투 삼달리
Directed by Cha Yeong-hoon, starring Ji Chang-wook and Shin Hye-sun.
Watched 4 December 2023 - 21 January 2024 — 16 episodes (DRAMACOOL/NETFLIX)
After suffering a fall from grace, a photographer returns to her hometown and bumps into her childhood friend, rekindling an unfinished romance. (Synopsis: IMDB)
*At first I couldn't get into this show. It's slow and there is not much happening. I also didn't fall in love right away with the characters. But as the series progressed, I came to love the main characters and I love the family and friends dynamics.
*Ji Chang-wook and Shin Hye-sun have good chemistry. I love Ji Chang-wook but I had never seen Shin Hye-sun in a series before. I like her, even though it took some time to really like her character.
*The love between the main couple comes across as natural and I even like their lovey-dovey moments.
*The elder sister (Shin Dong-mi) is really funny. I especially laughed a lot with the scene where she has a job as a traffic controller; also the cockroach scene was hilarious. I also found Yang Kyung-won funny (I know him from Crash Landing on You). He plays Shin Dong-mi's ex-husband and the CEO of a big firm. They had great comical chemistry together.
*The younger sister (Kang Mi-na) and the dolphin man were a cute couple. I also liked her little daughter, though at times these precocious child characters can become a bit too much. But I loved the kid in her emotional moments.
*I like Kang Young-seok as Boo Sang-do and his friendship with Ji Chang-wook, and I thought it was a shame they didn't give him a romantic subplot.
*I love Kim Mi-kyung as the mother of the three sisters and leader of haenyeo. The subplot with Kim Mi-kyung and her friend who died (Ji Chang-wook's mother) was moving. Ji Chang-wook's father was a bit annoying in his tenacity but we could still understand where he was coming from and fortunately he turned around in the end.
*There is even a 4th couple: one of the main couple's best friends who is a security guard at the meteorological institute (played by Lee Jae-won) with one of Shin Hye-sun's studio assistants. They were cute.
*Love the exhibition scene and the team spirit. The photographs are also very beautiful.
*I love the island vibe!
*Lovely OST as well.
*The show was funny at times and often heartwarming and I also cried a couple of times.
