Flower of Evil (2020) 악의 꽃
Directed by Kim Cheol-kyu, starring Lee Joon-gi, Moon Chae-won, Jang Hee-jin and Seo Hyun-woo.
SOME TRUTHS CAN RUIN A LIFE IN A SINGLE MOMENT.
Hiding a twisted past, a man maintains his facade as the perfect husband to his detective wife — until she begins investigating a series of murders. (Synopsis: Letterboxd)
This is one of my elder sister's favourite K-dramas and that's saying a lot because she doesn't even like thrillers. She gave it the highest rating on MDL and would even score it higher if it would have been possible. This drama receives multiple praise in general so it's no wonder that such a lauded show raises the bar of expectations. I have to say that I was a bit underwhelmed with the first episode as it initially looked like a standard thriller to me, but now I'm 7 episodes in and it's getting increasingly interesting. The show serves up a multi-layered story and I cannot wait for the layers to be peeled off one by one. It has some similarities with the recently watched Undercover (with Ji Jin-hee being married to Kim Hyun-joo and pretending to be someone he's not). Lee Joon-gi (whom I had seen in Two Weeks and liking him) is a far better actor than Ji Jin-hee, though, and his performance runs the gamut of emotions. He plays the different sides of his character really well. I also find him attractive at times (in his serious moments), but then at other instants he just looks too polished, with the lipstick and all.

I had never seen Moon Chae-won before, and though she's pretty, I didn't warm up to her right away. But now I really like her. She was quite cold-blooded and relentless in episode 7 when she brought Lee Joon-gi to the crime scene. I felt sorry for him, how she tortured him. I don't know how things will pan out but I find myself rooting for Lee Joon-gi and I come to believe he's not the criminal they make him out to be. Well, I could be wrong, but I don't think my sister would have liked this so much if the male lead was indeed a serial killer. Let's wait and see. I'm curious to know how things will develop between the main couple. Also, what's with Lee Joon-gi's fake parents? There's a big mystery there. By the way, I like the bromance between the male leads Lee Joon-gi and Seo Hyun-woo. It's fun to watch them together. Definitely planning to binge and finish the series this coming weekend!
