*Finished the first season of this epic historical show yesterday. I started binging the second season right away and I'm expecting to finish it this weekend.
*I'm enjoying this series with its beautiful visuals. The scene in episode 1 where we see our female lead Ahn Eun-jin (as Yoo Gil-chae) following a spool of thread in her dream is absolutely gorgeous.
*Male lead Namkoong Min gives an outstanding performance (for which he won the BaekSang Arts Award for Best Actor; show won the BaekSang Arts Award for Best Drama). I love his character Lee Jang-hyun, his quiet demeanour and his facial micro-expressions. He pretends to be shallow, constantly fan in hand and waving (he reminded me a bit of the Scarlet Pimpernel), yet he has strong beliefs that help guide his judgments and decisions. Most of the time he seems undisturbed and in control but when he's hurt and suffers from heartbreak (this only happens when it concerns Gil-chae), you see the emotional pain in his eyes. My viewer's heart aches for him then.
*I love to see how Jang-hyun loves Gil-chae and how she slowly realises she loves him too. I like him teasing her continuously, their bickering, and how feisty Gil-chae is and how she speaks her mind. Show throws a lot of obstacles in the main couple's way so it's no easy romance. But I'm hoping for a happy ending!
*Love episode 7 with the war being over. Our main leads meet again, and there's a lovely kissing scene in the fields.
*I wasn't really interested in the war politics and was waiting for the love story to continue but I ended up reading online about King Injo, Crown Prince Sohyeon, Qing invasion of Joseon, Ming & Qing dynasties, Namhan Mountain Fortress & Ganghwa Island, Jurchens/Manchus, etc., to get a better understanding of the historical context. It's actually quite interesting.
*Although I kept making comparisons in the beginning between the show's four main characters and those from Gone With the Wind — the novel/film where the writer drew inspiration from — it became a show all on its own quickly enough and GWTW had been forgotten.
*I like Lee Da-in as Kyung Eun-ae (Gil-chae's closest friend), the counterpart of Melanie Hamilton from GWTW. She's very sweet. Lee Hak-joo's Nam Yeon-joon (counterpart of Ashley Wilkes) is a bit boring but he makes a good pair with Lee Da-in.
*I could write more notes, but what it all boils down to is this: I love this show!
