Go Ahead (2020): started watching 19 October 2024 (21/40 episodes)
I'm halfway through this series and want to give a quick update. I love this as a family drama and love all the heartfelt moments. I especially love the relationship between Li Haichao, the father of Jianjian, and the second brother Ziqiu. Their scenes together are very emotional. Also the interactions between the two fathers are among my favourite moments of the show.
It's an easy watch and I like the characters but I do have some qualms about the romance. I knew beforehand I could expect some and I'm a romantic at heart, so I usually welcome a romantic subplot. But I don't think it's handled well here. We know the older brother Ling Xiao has romantic feelings for Jianjian but the almost lip kiss in the bedroom (ep. 20) was uncomfortable and I'm glad he held back. The elevator scene in ep. 21, with Ling Xiao making his feelings clear to Jianjian and talking about marriage already, was very awkward. I don't like how fast he moves and he comes on way too strong. The insertion of the romance just feels so abrupt and swift. In a way it's understandable, though, because Ling Xiao has been restraining himself for so long, being in love with Jianjian since high school.
The best thing about these awkward scenes are Jianjian's reactions to Ling Xiao's advances. The watermelon kitchen scene is hilarious. I really like Jianjian, she's funny, and I definitely want to see more of actress Tan Songyun. Of course Jianjian has always loved Ling Xiao as a sibling, and I guess it won't be long before she realises her feelings for Ling Xiao are changing and become less sisterly. In any case, the way she tries to avoid Ling Xiao makes me chuckle.
I don't like the younger brother Ziqiu falling for Jianjian too. Why can't they just let him be her 'brother'? I really don't want the two brothers to start a rivalry. Incidentally, I still like Ziqiu better than Ling Xiao. Much has to do with the appeal of the actors. I guess I'm not a fan of Song Weilong. I also prefer Ziqiu's profession to Ling Xiao's, obviously. Ziqiu is a pastry chef and owns his own café and Ling Xiao is a dentist, probably because Jianjian already had tooth problems when she was a kid. So Jianjian, who has a sweet tooth, can satisfy her cravings at the café of the one brother, and have her cavities filled by the other brother, lol.
