(Some spoilers!)
*This modern-day fairytale, set in a fictional 21st-century constitutional monarchy, is probably one of the most anticipated shows of 2026 (also by me). Yet already early on, this drama received mixed reviews on MDL, while still airing. (Why do people leave bad ratings and reviews after only 3 episodes??!) I thought about waiting till all 12 episodes had been broadcasted and see whether the general opinion on the series had improved, but then I decided not to wait and just dive in (at the time only 6 episodes had been aired.) I love the leading couple — IU/Lee Ji-eun as Seong Hui-ju and Byeon Woo-seok as Grand Prince I-an — so only for their appeal I figured it would be worth watching. Also, the story premise of a fake marriage between an illegitimate chaebol heir and a Grand Prince is fodder for romance lovers like me.
*So I watched episode 1 and immediately liked it. I had already seen scenes from this episode and was prepared the female lead Seong Hui-ju is not the most likeable character. But as the first episode progressed, she became funnier. She shows a strong will and spunk and has a great business sense. Admittedly, she doesn't have the warmest and most engaging personality, there's a sharp edge to her, but I like how vulnerable she gets and caring. IU manages to portray a nuanced character and gives an overall good performance. When the romance kicks in later on, Hui-ju's support for the Grand Prince is sincere, and she's there for him all the way. (After 2 eps, I read the recap on Dramabeans and was happy that my trusted site liked the opening episodes, even beyond expectations.)
*I like Byeon Woo-seok. I loved him in Lovely Runner and the movie 20th Century Girl, and I couldn't help falling for him again. I also think he has good chemistry with IU, and they made their romance credible. He has some good emotional scenes.
*The familiar K-drama trope of sharing a past is deployed here too, and it's well executed. I like the fact that the Grand Prince has liked Seong Hui-ju ever since he first met her years and years ago.
*The second leads — Noh Sang-hyun as Prime Minister Min Jeong-woo and Gong Seung-yeon as Queen dowager/mother Yoon Yi-rang — are not a romantic couple, and they are grey characters. I really disliked the Queen at first, but she sees the error of her ways eventually and redeems herself. The Prime Minister turns out to be the villain and was beyond redemption. I thought I had never seen the actor Noh Sang-hyun before but apparently he's in Pachinko. I was impressed with Gong Seung-yeon's performance. I have seen this actress in less challenging roles (The First Responders, Are You Human?, and Circle), but here she gets to show some serious acting chops. I also thought she looked beautiful, especially in the traditional hanbok dress.
*I love the third leads — Yoo Su-bin as Choi Hyeon, aide to the Grand Prince, and Lee Yeon as Do Hye-jeong, Hui-ju's chief secretary. Their characters are extremely likeable and adorable. I was waiting for them to get romantically involved. And when that happened, I was so happy for them. They are so cute together. The kissing scene at the busstop!
*I love how the relationship between Hui-ju and her brother changed for the better (Lee Jae-won as Seong Tae-ju, seen him in Welcome to Samdal-ri) — even her relationship with her father — and how Hui-ju received support from her family in the end. I even liked the sister-in-law eventually (Chae Seo-an as Han Da-yeong). Da-yeong and Tae-ju made a wacky couple and also had some funny moments.
*Because it's a romcom, the focus is on the romance of our OTP, but there's also royal intrigue, and I was happy it was easy to understand and never became confusing.
*This show really delivered with the final episode and the wrap-up wasn't rushed. I had not expected this series to end with the abdication of the monarchy. It was a great suprise and also fitting. With the three-years-later time jump while still half an hour to go of the episode, there was enough time to tie up things nicely, and I really like the inclusion of the museum exhibition of the royal palace artifacts.
*Too bad we didn't see what happened to the Prime Minister. I would have loved a scene included where we would see him in jail.
*I really like the little king. He was so cute. He was also good in conveying his feelings to the viewer. I felt for the little guy.
*Love the great cinematography and OST!
*While Perfect Crown was by no means a Perfect Drama and certainly has its flaws, it was thoroughly enjoyable, and I might watch it again.
