The Ghost Detective

The Ghost Detective (2018) 오늘의 탐정

Watched 18 - 25 July 2022 — 16 episodes (DRAMACOOL)

Finally finished this show! Enjoyed it, despite my misgivings about the plot. But I love the relationship between the leads Daniel Choi and Park Eun-bin (sadly, no kiss) and I also love the rest of the team. I liked how they showed what happened to each character after Choi died. Fortunately the last episode is satisfying and wraps up everything nicely. It was a good thing we didn’t have to deal with evil Lee Ji-ah anymore. I didn’t think Choi dying was the end of him but had no idea how he was going to come back. Well, he’s still a ghost who can make himself visible to others. I didn’t really understand that part but I was happy his partner Kim Won-hae could give him a proper hug this time.

I liked reading on IMDB how a reviewer (giving this show a high rating) chooses to believe that Choi gets a second chance in life because he has made a sacrifice for the people he loves, so as a reward he can become human again. Since the ending is uplifting and open to interpretation, I’d like to fantasise too about Choi becoming human and finding happiness with Park Eun-bin. I hadn’t anticipated the introduction to a new ghost case in this episode, and this would actually make a great start for a second season.

Overall, this show was entertaining enough, but its biggest draw is the cast and the characters. It would be really nice if Daniel Choi and Park Eun-bin could be cast together again in a romantic comedy or drama.

(Collage made by me, with screencaps of the heartwarming reunion of our cute lead couple taken by me from the final episode.)
