Watched 28 August - 4 September 2022 — 16 episodes (DRAMACOOL/VIKI)
Two days ago I finished watching Be Melodramatic (2019) 멜로가 체질, directed by Lee Byeong-heon and Kim Hye-young.
Some random thoughts:
*I chose this series because I felt like watching a slice-of-life drama and this also has Son Suk-ku in a supporting role.
*After 3 episodes I was almost ready to put this on hold, because I couldn’t get into it, and in fact, I found it a bit boring. Yet I did like the lead actresses Chun Woo-hee, Jeon Yeo-been and Han Ji-eun and their characters a lot! I was also curious to know what would happen to them and Son Suk-ku still had to make his first appearance. Then I watched a clip on YouTube with Son Suk-ku and Jeon Yeo-been together, and eager to learn about their story, I continued watching.
*After finishing episode 6 I felt bored once more and contemplated again to temporarily abandon the show. Yet still waiting for Son Suk-ku and liking the cast and characters, I decided to go on. I didn’t find it binge-worthy yet, just taking it one episode at a time.
*Then episode 7 happened and something finally clicked. I also really liked the development of the friendship and romance between script writer Chun Woo-hee and director Ahn Jae-hong, as well as the story between the actress (Lee Joo-been) and her manager (Kim Myung-Joon). I liked the actor who played the manager.
*I like the fact that the series is set in the entertainment world and that we’re getting a peek into the making of a K-drama. It was funny how they discussed the product placement of a massage chair and couldn’t find a suitable scene to have the product incorporated.
*Having finished the show now, I can say that despite the slow start and my initial lack of engagement, I thoroughly enjoyed the series and basically binge-watched the last 10 episodes. It’s actually well written with well-rounded characters. The final episode is satisfying, they wrapped up everything nicely, and we got to see all the different couples and their happy endings (well, most of them are happy).
*I love the actress Jeon Yeo-been (she’s beautiful) and her sad character. I felt for her the most. Luckily she got paired with Son Suk-ku as her new love interest and I love their storyline and also Suk-ku’s character. It’s an open ending between them but I’m confident that their characters will eventually find a way to each other. It’s too bad Suk-ku didn’t make his first appearance sooner.
*Of the three female leads I found Han Ji-eun (she reminded me of Park Eun-bin) and her story the least appealing. They hinted at a romance with her new colleague Gong Myoung but ultimately she dated some other guy. It was disappointing that Myoung probably got back with his ex-girlfriend while being in a toxic relationship with her (I didn’t like that actress at all).
*Nice OST, I especially like the song Consolation by Kwon Jin-ah. The song Your Shampoo Scent In The Flowers sticks annoyingly in your head, though. I prefer the duet ballad version.
