Currently Watching: The Light in Your Eyes

The Light in Your Eyes (2019) 눈이 부시게
Directed by Kim Sok-yun, starring Han Ji-min, Kim Hye-ja and Nam Joo-hyuk.

Started to watch this slice-of-life series (with a touch of fantasy) yesterday. It’s my first K-drama since months (this year I’ve only seen Chicago Typewriter in January). I’ve read good things about this drama and I like both Han Ji-min and Kim Hye-ja (I’ve seen this older actress in Our Blues and Dear My Friends). The first episode (at least the first part) didn’t win me over right away, the tone was a bit too comical with the weird brother. But things changed significantly when male lead Nam Joo-hyuk made his entrance and the story really kicked off.

Now three episodes into the show and I’m definitely hooked. It’s a compelling story of a young woman of 25 years old (Han Ji-min), finding herself ageing overnight and turning into an old woman of 70+ (Kim Hye-ja), after using a mysterious watch to turn back the time and undo the truck accident that killed her father. I love the family relationships here and also Han Ji-min’s friendship with her two girlfriends. By now they all know the story of the ageing overnight (except Nam Joo-hyuk) and Kim Hye-ja has accepted her situation and is adjusting to her new reality. I didn’t do any ugly crying yet, but I’ll be expecting some soon. I did have tears in my eyes with various scenes, especially the scene with Kim Hye-ja and her father, telling him what had happened to her was worth it (so her dad lived). Cannot wait to see more!
