The Fiery Priest — Season 2 (2024) 열혈사제2
Directed by Park Bo-ram, starring Kim Nam-gil, Kim Sung-kyun and Lee Ha-nee.
Watched 29 January - 12 February 2025 — 12 episodes (DRAMACOOL/KISSKH)
*Finally finished the second season of The Fiery Priest. I subscribed to Disney+ recently and this show was supposedly available to stream on their service, but to my great annoyance it was region restricted. Luckily Dramacool reappeared with other extensions, and I watched a couple of episodes on DC until a big mark appeared on the videos and made them unwatchable. Then I found KISSKH, a great website with fast load times and a sizable library, and I was happy to be able to finish The Fiery Priest.
*Like I said in an earlier post, the biggest complaint I have with this season is the over-the-top humour. Show goes really overboard with it and it was too goofy at times. The first season has silly humour too, occasionally, but it was more grounded in reality and it never felt cringe-worthy, whereas in the second season it did.
*Despite not loving this season as much as I loved season 1, I still found enough to enjoy here. The main characters are still likeable (even if they are way over the top at times), but you have the sense that you know them and you can see past their silliness. I was happy to find some heartwarming moments as well, like in episode 11 when the altar boy came out of a coma and he had a video call with our lovely team located in Busan.
*I still love Kim Nam-gil as Father Michael Kim and was glad to catch him in plenty of serious moments. I love how he fights injustice, standing up for the powerless and weak, and I love all of his scenes with Lee Ha-nee as Park Kyung-sun. They have such great chemistry. No romance (sob) but they share a great friendship.
*I like Kim Sung-kyun as Goo Dae-young less in this second season but I do like Kim Won-hae as Vladimir Kozayev better, and Vladimir has a more prominent role here than in season 1.
*There are 3 new faces: Sung Joon as the drug lord (I know him as the likeable family friend in Call It Love), Seo Hyun-woo as the corrupt prosecutor (seen him before in Flower of Evil), and Kim Hyeong-seo aka Bibi as the detective and aunt of Goo Dae-young. Bibi is a bit too comical at times, Sung Joon and Seo Hyun-woo play the two villains.
*Kim Nam-gil shows his singing skills here (I never knew he is a singer as well and I love his voice) and the duet with the female Chief of detectives didn't make much sense. Also the ventriloquist dummy is totally random and weird.
*Probably the one person who never gets comical is Sung Joon as the drug lord, looking handsome in his three-piece suit, but extremely ruthless and violent. I almost felt sorry for him for having fallen for prosecutor Park Kyung-sun and finding out she betrayed him.
*The last episode with the hearing and the music video is a bit too much again, but overall I had fun with this series and I would even welcome a third season.
