Memories of the Alhambra (2018) 알함브라 궁전의 추억
Directed by Ahn Gil-ho, starring Hyun Bin and Park Shin-hye.
Already watched 10 episodes of this show and enjoying it so far. I live in Spain and I love the fact that the story is primarily set in Granada. In the past I’ve spent a lot of time in Granada (taking Spanish language courses), and for one who knows the city really well, it’s instantly clear that a lot of the location shots are NOT from Granada. (I read online that apart from Granada location shooting was also done in Barcelona, Girona and even Budapest.) I liked to hear people speak Spanish on this show and being able to understand it, and it was fun to hear Park Shin-hye speak Spanish as well, even though her pronunciation was a bit strange at times.

Hyun Bin’s character isn’t very likeable at first, a bit smug and arrogant, but his transformation to being scared, anxious and on the verge of a nervous breakdown, elicits sympathy from the viewer, and Hyun Bin manages to give a compelling performance. I like his budding romance with Park Shin-hye (their chemistry is not the greatest but at least it’s decent) and she is great in her emotional outbursts. The series is suspenseful enough, though the game itself isn’t that gripping. It’s basically playing warrior, killing the enemy and gaining another level. I guess that’s what video games are all about (I have no affinity with gaming at all), yet what makes it more interesting here is that we’re dealing with an innovative augmented reality game gone wrong. Now I have 6 more episodes to go and I hope things will be solved in a satisfying way. I’ve already read online that for some viewers the ending was a huge disappointment, so fingers crossed that I won’t get disappointed too.
