When I Fly Towards You (2023) 当我飞奔向你
Directed by Shuang Yuan, starring Zhou Yiran and Zhang Miaoyi.
Watched 3 - 11 July 2024 — 24 episodes (NETFLIX)
Set off by a sweet chance encounter, 16-year-old Su Zaizai finds herself helplessly drawn to Zhang Lurang — her smart, charming yet distant schoolmate. (Synopsis: Letterboxd)
*Finished my first C-drama yesterday and loved it!
*I had said in a previous post that this isn't binge-worthy because there's little plot. But at some point I just wanted to keep on watching and see the leads get together as a couple. It's also such an easy watch and I wanted to hang out with the lovable characters. So in that respect I guess it was binge-worthy after all.

*For the most part this is a slice-of-life high school series. Normally when I watch a K-drama with high school scenes they're always flashbacks but here it's the main setting of our story. I thought it was quite refreshing there's no bullying and the classmates are mostly friendly towards one another. Also the teachers are nice. The writers kept things sweet, with little drama or tragedy. There's no violence, no serial killer on the loose, no white truck of doom, no love triangle. Just an uncomplicated story about first love and friendships.
*In the last episodes the five main characters graduate from high school and go their separate ways to pursue their studies and careers. It was nice to see them all grown-up. But it also created a bit of a nostalgic feel with their high school days being over.
*The characters are well-rounded and their relationships are well developed.

*The leads have great chemistry. I especially love Zhou Yiran as Zhang Lurang, his quiet demeanour and his half-smiles, and the way he looks at Zaizai.
*I also love Zhang Miaoyi as Su Zaizai and her sunny disposition, and I love when she changes moods, going from cheerful to hurt, sad or wronged. It's so different from her usual happy bubbly mood.
*It's endearing how openly Zaizai likes Lurang and how she doesn't hide the fact that she thinks the world of him.
*I loved the episode where Zaizai became sad and hurt because she overheard someone saying that Lurang thought she was annoying and pestering him, and she therefore distanced herself from him. On top of that he was also transferring to another school, and I felt so sorry for her.
*The storyline with Lurang's brother was emotional, and the flashbacks to the younger versions of the two brothers made me teary-eyed.
*There is a sense of melancholy when Zaizai and Lurang are apart, studying hard, writing each other letters. I was eager for them to become more than friends and express their feelings. Their love and longing for each other was palpable and jumping off the screen. It felt like they were really growing up before my very own eyes.

*The friendship between the five friends feels so real and heartwarming. They're always there for each other. I also love the 2nd romantic couple and the fifth friend with his grandma. Glad she didn't die.
*Love the scene where Lurang picks up an upset Zaizai with his car after her social work dinner. I also love it when Zaizai shows up unexpectedly at Lurang's work presentation which means so much to him. They are so supportive of one another!
*The perfect proposal scene! And the wedding! Everything is so wholesome and sweet.
*By the way, I also loved Zaizai's parents. And the OST!
*Last but not least .... absolutely love the videos Zaizai makes. So great!
